IDC Distinguished Member Award

Stephen J. Heine
2013 Distinguished Member
Award Recipient

Stephen J. Heine, a partner with Heyl, Royster, Voelker & Allen in Peoria, has been selected to receive the 2013 IDC Distinguished Member Award. Outgoing IDC President R. Howard Jump presented the award to Heine at the association’s 49th Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Heine’s involvement with the IDC has spanned nearly thirty years and has included serving as one of the early Editors in Chief of the IDC Quarterly and as the 2004-2005 President.

As much as he has given to the IDC, Heine says he has reaped great benefits from being a member. "Even when a young lawyer, it was always important to me to be involved in professional and other activities and not simply handle the individual legal matters of clients. IDC allowed me to first serve as an author of articles in the Quarterly, then a speaker at many IDC seminars, then the Quarterly Editor. I then was elected to the Board, became an officer, then the President. I have many fine memories of the IDC, but the monthly dinners that the officers and executive director had before each Friday Board meeting are some of the fondest. We gathered at one of the Chicago hotels and restaurants and informally discussed the issues for the next day's Board meeting. We did this often late into the evening. Some of those evening meetings resulted in wonderful ideas that allowed the IDC to flourish.”

"Since that time, I have served on the Board of Directors of the DRI, as a member of the Executive Council of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys (ADTA) and the President of the ADTA. The relationships that I made at the IDC are some of my closest and longest. Many others that I met at the ADTA have also followed similar career paths and have travelled from young lawyers to senior members of their firms and professional organizations.”

IDC President Howard remarks that "Steve’s contributions to the defense bar have been many and the award is well deserved. In 2004, as president of the IDC, Steve wrote:”

‘The IDC as an organization derives its strength from its members. It is your association. Your active participation and that of you firm is essential. Do not sit on the sidelines; do not simply work your files. To have a rewarding career, more is required. To provide first-class representation of your clients and for your own growth, you need to share ideas, teach, learn from others, and be involved as a leader.’

"’First Class’ aptly describes the leadership demonstrated by Steve. He did not just write those words, he has lived by them,” said Jump.

In addition to currently serving as the Immediate Past President of ADTA and a DRI Board Member, Heine has a very busy trial practice.
