Membership in the Illinois Defense Counsel is open to individuals (private practice attorneys, public sector attorneys, corporate or association counsel, and claims professionals), law school students, and educators. Applicants are admitted to membership upon a majority vote of the Board of Directors. IDC Membership Categories and DuesPrivate Practice AttorneysMembership for private practice attorneys is available to those who are members in good standing of the Bar of the State of Illinois, and; who will support the purpose and mission of the Association; and, who devote a substantial portion of his or her
professional practice to the representation of business, corporate, governmental, insurance, professional or individual civil litigants involving tort, contract, insurance, employment, governmental, or business matters, and does not, for the most
part, represent plaintiffs in personal injury litigation. Public Sector AttorneysMembership for private sector attorneys is available to those who are members in good standing of the Bar of the State of Illinois, and; are employed by a governmental or other public sector organization, for the purpose of providing legal representation and counsel only to that entity; and who will support the purpose and mission of the Association. Public Sector Attorney Membership Dues: Attorneys, in practice: 0-5 years $125; 6 or More Years $150 Claims ProfessionalsMembership for claims professionals is available to those who are members in good standing of the Bar of the State of Illinois, and; who are employed as a claims professional by a corporation or insurance company, who spends a substantial portion of his or her professional time hiring or supervising outside counsel in the representation of business, insurance companies or their insureds, associations or governmental entities in civil litigation, or those claims executives who directly or indirectly manage other professionals who do so, and; who will support the purpose and mission of the Association Claims Professional Membership Dues: $125 Corporate or Association CounselMembership for corporate or association counsel is available to those who are members in good standing of the Bar of the State of Illinois, and; who are employed exclusively by a corporate or other organization, for the purpose of providing legal representation and counsel only to that entity, its affiliates and subsidiaries; and; who will support the purpose and mission of the Association. Corporate or Association Counsel Membership Dues: $125 StudentsMembership for law school students is available to those who are currently enrolled in an ABA accredited law school; who will support the purpose and mission of the Association, and; who desire to receive the benefits of law student membership as shall be determined from time to time by the Board of Directors. Note: Law student membership shall terminate six (6) months after graduation. Law School Student Membership Dues: $20 EducatorsMembership for educators is available to those who are full-time professors or associate professors of law at an ABA accredited law school; who will support the purpose and mission of the Association, and; who desires to receive the benefits of educator membership as shall be determined from time to time by the Board of Directors. Full Time professors or associate professors at ABA accredited law schools: $75 Please note that dues in the Illinois Defense Counsel are not deductible as a charitable contribution for U.S. federal income tax purposes, but may be deductible as a business expense.
